DAMAI Disabled Persons Association of Selangor and Federal Territory are in a move to raise RM150,000 for its building fund.Its latest venture is to sell tickets for local production, Seed of Darkness to be screened on Dec 23.Association vice president M. Manoharan said the association managed to raise RM250,000 and the ticket sales was to raise the remaining amount.“We need this amount to buy the current premises that we have been renting for RM1,200 a month since 1998,” he said in a recent interview.
Manoharan said 2,000 tickets of RM20 each will be sold by the association and RM10 from each ticket will go to the association's building fund.The movie stars Miss Malaysia 2003/4 Wong Sze Sen, popular model Amber Chia and Malaysian Idol 2004 second-runner up Vic Teo.It will be screened at Curve Damansara Theatre.
The movie is about a single mother who gives birth to a daughter after undergoing in-vitro fertilisation.Eight years later, the girl behaves strangely and insists on meeting her father.The single mother, who does not know the donor, goes in search of him.
Manoharan said the association was set up in 1998 with the main objective of reaching out to the disabled and helping them to be independent.The association's training centre provides computer classes, wheelchair workshop and helping the disabled to seek employment.It also provides opportunity for those qualified to undergo leadership training abroad.“We want to educate people on the importance of living independently. We hope to unite the disabled, be those in the urban or rural areas, to realise our aim of creating an independent disable community, which will be on par with the rest of society,” he added.
