Part 3: Desperate Neighbours

Dubai this, Dubai that. If there's anything good in that part of the world it must be in Dubai. Or at least that is the general assumption.

This time, let's take a detour further north to another tiny emirate called Kuwait. Here's some fast facts from Wikipedia:
Kuwait is a highly industrialized country with a GDP (PPP) of US$138.6 billion[40] and a per capita income of US$55,300[41], making it the fourth richest country in the world.[42] Kuwait's human development index (HDI) stands at 0.871, the second highest in Middle East, after Israel and the highest in the Arab world. With a GDP growth rate of 5.7%, Kuwait has one of the fastest growing economies in the region.[43] According to the 2008 Index of Economic Freedom, Kuwait has the second-most free economy in the Middle East.

Indeed, Kuwait has seen spectacular growth, but it is all being overshadowed by Dubai. Not to be left out, Kuwait is vying to retake its place as the number one place to be in the Gulf. It has planned for the development of the single biggest real-estate project in the Middle East called the Madinat al-Hareer (city of silk).

Built on an area of 200 square kilometres, the city would consist of four major zones - a city of commerce, a city of leisure and recreation, a city of ecology and a city of diplomacy and education, Kuhne said. The commerce city would sit in the middle of a canal system and aims to boost Kuwait's efforts to become a regional trade and financial centre, he said.

At the centre of the commerce city, a 1001-metre tower will be built, called the Mubarak Tower.
Its height is a reference to the classic work of Arabic literature, The One Thousand and One Nights. Three blades that will be built near the top of the tower, will carry a mosque, a church and a synagogue to signify the unity of the three monotheistic religions.

The City of Silk supposedly signifies the rebirth of the famed Silk Road.

Meanwhile in THE kingdom.....

King Abullah: Damn! all these puny emirates are becoming so famous! How can this be??? We are the Kingdom! The family of al-Saud! We are the biggest Arab nation, the birthplace of the prophet and his successful product called Islam, and we own a quarter of the oil on this earth! Yet all outsiders see of us is terrorism and religous extremism. How did Dubai come to have so many tallest buildings???

Vizier: Sir, the rulers of the United Arab Emirates are a very forward looking bunch. They know that Allah's blessings of oil will run out one day, and they are using all their wealth to build up industries that will ensure the continued survival and prosperity of the nation long after the oil has finished. Today Dubai is the number one place to be for foreign travellers and businessman alike in our Middle Eastern part of the world. Maybe if you would spend less money on your personal expenditures like your expensive European car collection, or your open house pleasure palaces, and instead tried to channel more of our Saudi nation's wealth toward uber-development projects so that the dispersion of wealth would be more equal and our Gini co-efficient would be closer to 0, than we could become as popular and well known as the United Arab Emirates

King Abdullah: I don't know what babble you just said, but the family of Saud will not lose face to these puny emirs! Insya-Allah we shall build a tower ONE MILE HIGH, and it shall be called the Mile High Tower!!!! We shall be the first to reach Allah!

At that very moment, throughout the Gulf, all the legions and devouts of Allah paused from whatever they were doing: smoking shisha, reciting the Quran, practicing their Ak-47 skills; and in unison as one ummah they praised: ALLAH-U-AKHBAR!

An overly defensive graph made by some overzealot Saudis: Anyone know what mamlakah means?

a not so defensive graph: The Hyder Consulting tower is a different building, but it is also a mile high, and will be built somewhere in the Middle East.

As you can see, the Middle East will soon offer people the opportunity to be part of the Mile High Club without ever getting into an airplane again.
